get coal and sticks and go to the crafting table and put the coal in the top middle square and the sticks in the middle square
To make torches in mind-craft you will need coal and sticks. Go make a crafting box put the coal in the middle box and put a stick below the coal. Hopefully you will see a picture of a torch click on it and place it in your inventory. Now you should have torches.

The only use I know of is that if you take a stick and a piece of coal you'll get 4 Torches. S= Stick C= Coal E= Empty space EEE CEE = Torches SEE
