In Dungeon Keeper 2 - and possibly Dungeon Keeper but I haven't played that game - you can cast a spell to possess your minions that live in your dungeon, making the minion more powerful, especially with a human intelligence behind it instead of an artificial one.

Then you have unlocked ''Free Mode'', then you can evolve your starter(s). And you can go solo, if you wish.
You will have to complete the first story mode to get Uxie etc once you've completed the first story mode complete the second story mode then go in search of your legendaries when you have completed the game
