I was asking the same question when I got HeartGold!! There are a few ways to get shiny Pokemon.
1: Soft Reset (Turn DS off and on until you get a shiny.
2: Try randomly find one in the wild.
3: Breed your Pokemon with a foreign Pokemon. So a Pokemon from a Japanese game or something.
There is also a 4th it is easy i figured it out when i was playing today!!!!!!!!
i tried many dfferent routines and all you have to do is go on the 2nd row in the grass go to the trainer card go out then back in and then out again now go left up down left down right and then run into a shiny pokemon!!!!!!! It is as easy as pie!!!!!!
