There are many ways. When you are nearly finished with Unicorn Way in Wizard City, there is a quest under the name of "Stop The Maker" where you must defeat Rattlebones. This will give you a 1 day, +20% speed "Enchanted Broom" rental mount once you have turned in your quest back to Ceran NightChant. Prospector Zeke (the man who gives you the "Find The Smiths" quest) is another option. He's located in The Commons near the entrance to the Pet Pavillion. You can purchase one day mounts there for gold which give you a 20% speed boost. Here is a list of the items you can buy:

You may also use crowns in the Crown Shop to purchase any mounts, temporary or permanent. (Remember: Permanent mounts give you a +40% speed boost and temporary only +20%.) You may purchase very few permanent mounts for gold. These include horse and broomstick mounts. Permanent gold purchased mounts in the Crown Shop range from 50,000-90,000 gold. Finally, if you are very lucky, you may get them at random after fighting bosses or other enemies from your quests. If you'd like to go faster, you can purchase the Boots of the Comet that will give you an additional speed boost of 8%.
