A determined, experienced hacker is very hard to trace because they not only know how to penetrate your systems, but they also know how to eliminate the breadcrumbs they leave in the system. Also, sometimes a sloppy attack is a sign you have been penetrated much earlier. One of the favorite old school tricks was to release the particulars of the ha ck a couple of weeks after determining there is nothing of value in a system to ex-filtrate or exploit. The "script kiddies" distract from the real hacker, who probably took himself out of the logs that sysadmins look at every day, but may have left some traces to follow. It's like a magician's trick, distract and redirect. That's why security guys are one of the few markets left for old fashioned dot-matrix printers, it's an audit log that can't be altered.
