If you are in a banshee, continue shooting the banshee, but save your fuel rod for when you are behind or directly above the banshee, or you may be damaged as well. If you are in a hornet, always follow and fire at the banshee and shoot missles whenever you get the chance.
Overall, the best way to kill a banshee is to take it down in the front with a heavy weapon, hijack it, attack it from the side or back, or skyjack it.
