The thing is you don't need to. Just have your sim click on a dresser and click plan outfit. From there you can add different outfits to all sets of clothes, i.e; everyday; formal wear; swimwear; and so on. Click any of the tabs and on the left of the blue box there is a tab you are automaticallly selected on. This will be showing your sims clothes you have planned for him/her. Underneath is another which i think has the number to next to it so you can select new clothes for that particular clothing section. You can also download clothes and lots of other things for your sims (like furniture, skins, make up, build objects, poses, lots, the list is endless!) from websites like modthesims.info or thesimsresource.com.
