Individuals are not randomly chosen. Instead producers choose contestants based on appeal to the viewing audience and the shows rating, as well as any special themed event they are having for the episode. They also must choose individuals unlikely to cause any problems on the show. Last year over a million people requested the chance to audition, and fewer than 600 people were selected to appear on the show's 200 episodes. Contestants are discouraged from expending money for the audition process.

One way to get a chance to audition is to attend a Wheelmobile event. In addition, make sure that you have filled out a contestant audition form. They will sometimes draw random names from their database to attend special auditions in selected cities. An appointment to audition does not guarantee you an appearance on the show, and all applicants are responsible for all expenses incurred for accommodations, travel to and from the audition site, and to and from the taping in Los Angeles (or another city.) You are not eligible to play on Wheel of Fortune if you are employed by, related to, or within the last five years know anyone who works for Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Television Inc., The Griffin Group, King World Productions, Inc., Sullivan Compliance Company, television stations (including advertisers and related radio stations) broadcasting Wheel of Fortune or JEOPARDY!, or game show prize suppliers.
