If I do not own a DVD copy, or if I did not pay for my copy, I am not allowed to download that movie to my computer or make a copy of that DVD. This distinction is extremely important, as illegal downloading of copyrighted material is a federal offense.
Another example is what's called "Open Source Software", such as Firefox or the Linux operating system. The designers and programmers of these programs allow people to download, change, and share this software through programs like BitTorrent without cost or legal problems. The recipient or distributor of the software can't try to take credit for the program's source code, or attempt to make money from the program (depending on the Open Source License from the original programmers).
