It's by steps. In Leaf Green and all in Pokemon games where breeding is possible, the daycare has a chance of finding an egg every 256 steps. Neither game time nor real time affects the time it takes the day care couple to find an egg.

Every step you take while you have Pokemon in daycare gives one exp. point to each Pokemon, which is why you find that lower level Pokemon level up quicker in daycare (there's less exp. required for leveling up). Time doesn't really have an effect.Hope that helps!~
