From the start, they wanted this sidekick to have a deep admiration for Sonic, and that the sidekick would want to be just like him. A man named Yasushi Yamaguchi came up with the design of a young fox with two tails, and the entry won. Originally the character was just going to be be called "Miles", however SEGA decided to rename him to 'Tails' instead.
