Does PlayStation 3 online cost any money?

The PlayStation Network does not now, or has it ever, cost any money to join or be a part of. Certain things like Netflix or movie / tv show / game downloads of course you have to pay for unless they're demos or trailers, but unlike Xbox live, the PSN is totally free.
