Not directly, it won't connect, but there is a way...
WHAT YOU NEED:
Your game and ds
A friend with a ds and an original copy of HG/SS that hasn't connected a pokewalker to it before
WHAT TO DO:
1. get your friend to catch a rubbish Pokemon, and put it in their party.
2. meet up in the union room and trade the Pokemon you want on the pokewalker with the rubbish Pokemon.
3. Your friend will now have your Pokemon.
4. get your friend to send the Pokemon to YOUR pokewalker.
5. release the rubbish Pokemon.
It is a bit time consuming, but I hope it helps!

The R4i Gold is a fake card released to try and take advantage of the R4i selling so well worldwide. R4i sdhc and r4i gold card are different flashcard. they are similar in functions. But different in package. they use difference kernel. Both of them are popular in Players currently.
You don't need to reformat the r4i gold card. You just need to format the MicroSD card, and reinstall the r4i gold kernel and games. Nothing about the r4i gold card.
r4i gold and r4i sdhc card are most popular in players. both of them can support 3ds, dsi and ds lite. but personally, I think the r4i gold card has better compatibility.
of course, new r4i v1.6 kernel can work on all below version of r4i card, including r4i v1.4 kernel.

If you updated the DSi, the new update may prevent you to use the R4i

Yes. Reformat the micro SD card before installing the kernel for the R4i SDHC. R4i sdhc card from r4i-sdhc.com accept a MicroSD card to run games and medias on Nintendo console. The MicroSD card is used for saveing R4i SDHC kernel and games. Such as Kingston or Sandisk. If you buy a r4i sdhc card, you should also take a Micro SD card.

the r4i v1.4 card is the old version, it can only work on dsi v1.4 and below console. No the latest r4 card for dsi is the r4i v1.4.5.
Typically R4i cards are only bought online - but I wouldn't buy an Ri gold card. It's a fake card (the original R4i is red in colour). Most flash cards are made in china, including the r4i gold card. you can buy the latest version - r4i gold 3ds card online. It usually cost 2 weeks to delivery to you. As before said, the r4i gold 3ds is not the best r4i card. Maybe, the r4i sdhc 3ds is better.
IF that is happening on your r4i there is something wrong with your r4i. It has nothing to do with the sd card its the r4i.
yes it does only if u have the latest firmware. Both the r4i sdhc 3ds card from r4i-sdhc.com and r4i gold 3ds card from r4ids.cn can support DSi european!
