Yes Most games that were out then did work, but not without errors and other problems for some of the games. The next batch of models had even more problems and these were the first models in Europe see related link
Before you think of running out to purchase the early PS3 model remember that they have no warranty and if sent to Sony for repair they will be replaced with a newer model if they can not be refurbished. A big word of caution the YLOD can and is routinely fixed. The fix will allow the PS3 to work for only a few months until the "Fix" is needed to be done again. see PS3 secrets related link for more on this quote: "However, if your PS3 has already had the YLOD, then you can reflow your motherboard every few months to keep it working (but it is not a permanent fix as the YLOD usually comes back)."
