Bob Wian created the Big Boy hamburger in 1937. The double deck hamburger was created for a patron & band member requesting something different. The burger and character came from a 6 year old boy, Richard Woodruff, who did odd jobs for grub. Wian called the lad Big Boy one day, hence the name. Warner Bros. artist Ben Washam sketched the original character on a napkin. Wian's restaurant, Bob's Pantry became Bob's, Home of the Big Boy and then simply Bob's Big Boy. The original Big Boy used mayo and red relish on top. The Frisch's Big Boy, which came out in 1946, it is served with tarter sauce. Elsewhere, a version of thousand island dressing is used. Elsewhere probably dates to 1952. Originally the Big Boy was 1/4 lb of beef. When McDonalds cloned the Big Boy, their Big Mac used 1/5 lb of beef and Big Boy allowed its operators to drop to 1/5 lb also. So the Big Boy came out in 1937.
