Despite what may be said, there is no chemical reaction when you drop a penny into a can of coke. That is providing that the penny has not come into contact with any other chemicals

It should generally act the same as silver polish. If the penny is dirty, leaving a penny in coke should clea it just as silver polish would a spoon.
