Coke contains citric acid and carbonic acid which can corrode and/or break down materials. With these two weak acids Coke can dissolve most things, it's just a matter of how long your willing to wait for it to do it.

Anything that dissolves in an acid with a pH of 3.2 will dissolve in coca cola. If you pour coca cola in a glass and put an egg in it, it will slowly dissolve the shell. Such drinks were originally acidic because they were put in reused glasses. The glasses were washed but might still contain pathogens. By making them acidic, the acid would kill the pathogens. This kept people from passing diseases back and forth. Try your own experiment. Drop a penny (zinc, a nickel, and a dime) into one glass of coke. Try a nail in another one. See what dissolves.
