Such drinks were originally acidic because they were put in reused glasses. The glasses were washed but might still contain pathogens. By making them acidic, the acid would kill the pathogens. This kept people from passing diseases back and forth. Try your own experiment. Drop a penny (zinc, a nickel, and a dime) into one glass of coke. Try a nail in another one. See what dissolves.
