If the food has been thawed under refrigeration and has not started to spoil, food can be safely refrozen. Partially thawed can be refrozen, too. But the extra freeze-thaw cycle will cause degradation of quality. It might be better to cook the food, then freeze it.

Can you refreeze thawed pork?

According to the USDA, once food is thawed in the refrigerator, it is safe to refreeze it without cooking, although there may be a loss of quality due to the moisture lost through defrosting. After cooking raw foods which were previously frozen, it is safe to freeze the cooked foods. No, you should not refreeze meat once it has been thawed.

Why should we never refreeze thaw food?

Because bacteria will grow in the meat once it is thawed and then you put it back in the freezer which just hibernates the bacteria - when you bring it out to thaw again the bacteria just multiplies and next thing you know cooking it just doesn't cut it and you could come down with some life threatening food poisoning. If you have thawed meat that you dont want to eat that day you can cook it into a meal and then re-freeze it, this is ok as long as you only reheat the meal once. You can not keep this meals leftovers for another time you will have to throw them out.

Can you refreeze chicken?

Do not cook any poultry, even Cornish hens, from the frozen state. Thaw in the refridgerator, then cook immediately. You can cook as many at a time as you want to. Four birds takes approx. 35 mins at 350 F. Poultry should be cooked to an internal temperature of 170 F, and the juices from the meat should be clear.
