There are quite a few large corporations that have headquarter buildings or plants in the area. Some of these are General Electric, Carilon Health System, Advance Auto Parts, Elizabeth Arden, and many more. The regional offices for Kroger Grocery Stores are also located in Roanoke. The cost of living in Roanoke is pretty average and most people say it is a great place to raise a family. Roanoke has its share of festivals each year that draws in many visitors to the area. Some of these are the Henry Street Festival, the Big Lick Blues Festival, a Chili Cook off Festival, and Festival in the Park. There are plenty of cultural and historical venues in Roanoke as well. Make sure you stop at the Science Museum of Western Virginia and the Hopkins Planetarium. There is also Taubman Museum of Art, the History Museum of Western Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The Transportation Museum actually has some restored steam locomotives as well as items from the aviation field. It is definitely the right place to bring your family.
