Yes, when this product was first introduced it was marketed as a medicine of sorts recommended mainly for symptoms such as headaches, exaustion, and nervousness. This was way back in the late 1800's when coke was first introduced. Cocaine is derived from the leaves of the coca plant; each gallon of syrup created contained roughly five ounces of the coca leaf. It is said that Coca Cola once contained up to 9 milligrams of cocaine per glass. A controversy broke out over this particular ingredient which lead to its removal from the recipe in 1903. In fact Coca Cola operates the only factory in the US allowed to process the coca leaf.

yes, it once did. I believe cocaine was illegalized in either 1903 or 08. Therefore, cocaine wasn't allowed anymore. Hence, cocaine really did not receive such a negative stigma until "crack" was popularized in the 80's by poorer neighborhoods.
