in the morning
The lieutenant believed the rebels would attack at dawn, as they often preferred to launch their assaults during the early morning hours when visibility was low and surprise was maximized. He had observed their patterns and anticipated that this timing would give them an advantage. His focus was on preparing his forces for the imminent threat, ensuring they were ready to respond swiftly.
The rebels attacked the lieutenant in October 1765 primarily in response to the enforcement of the Stamp Act, which imposed taxes on a variety of paper goods without colonial representation. This act fueled widespread resentment against British authority and perceived tyranny. The attack was part of a broader movement of resistance, where colonists sought to assert their rights and challenge the legitimacy of British taxation and governance in America. The incident underscored the growing tensions that would eventually lead to the American Revolution.

Lincoln provoke the CSA to attack so it would give a reason for the US to attack them and to give them the name of rebels to the people. Gave them more reason to stop the CSA independence and unite the US.
