No, they are actually just part of aboriginal myth, kind of like hades to the greek, I think the reason they made up that myth is so that people do not resort to cannibalism, unfortunately it backfired and caused a lot of panic, but like vampires and werewolf's and Zombies, it was just a myth, and it never really was real, in fact, zombies may have been thought up because of wendigos, there is also a rare mentle disorder called wendigo psychosis, which is a rare mentle disorder caused by cannibalism, it turns someone into a zombie by giving them an uncontrollable craving for human flesh, I'm not sure if it is contagious or not, but it is rare.
