The Emmy Awards have always been alcohol free. Alcohol is served in the theatre's lobby until 4:30pm and then guests are encouraged to take their seats for the 5:00pm start time. During the Emmys though, the only items sold at the lobby bars are soda, water, and small snacks. The 2017 Emmy Awards was an exception to the rule though! Stephen Colbert had planned to make a joke on stage that included alcohol, but the joke was eventually scrapped. Producers decided to allow the bars to serve alcohol only because the liqour license required for Colbert's joke had already been applied for and received by the Academy. After the awards have been won and everyone leaves the Microsoft Theatre, guests then head to the Governors Ball where they can eat and drink the night away.
