Since the closing of the USCG Station Taylors Island there have been several failed attempts at operating it as a restaurant and bar.
Most recently it has been beautifully renovated inside and out. It has been enhanced with an enclosed deck and is now open as PALM BEACH WILLIE'S FINE FOOD AND SPIRITS. Wonderful food!
Larry Vita built the Surfside 6 houseboat. My Granfather Ralph W. Weidler was Larry Vita's partner in a business called Surfside 6 Floating Homes. They pioneered houseboat building techniques using Larry's inventions of watertight compartments and the use of fiberglass on the hulls. The hulls were built upside down and turned over to complete the construction. The entire boat was kept on rollers until it was launched. My Sister Nancy and I visited the original houseboat in front of the Fountainbleu Hotel many times in the early 1960's A duplicate was built by Warner Brothers in Hollywood for all the interior shots.
Nick, Cody and the Boz from riptide lived on a boat. And the Surfside Six.
