Every now and then a television show comes along that is a pop-cultural lightning rod. No matter the plot attributes, acting talent (or lack of either) there's something special that captures the imagination of the viewing public and makes people want to do things like, say, dress like the shows characters. The CW's "Gossip Girl" is one of those shows. It doesn't hurt that the characters of the show have lives that include things like New York City penthouses and racks upon racks of designer clothing. But trust me, you don't need a trust fund to get the GG look.

First, if you have any phobia about wearing bright colors, you'll have to get rid of that right away. Main characters Blair and Serena are known for wearing splashing colors in ways that might seem strange to your average jane. You might pick a purple turtleneck and pair it with a grew skirt and neutral tights, but if you're Miss Waldorf you don't stop there. Add a lime green headband and an electric blue handbag and then you're on you way to gossip girl style. And the fun doesn't stop with crazy color combos. The same tips can be used for mixing patterns. Plaid with polka dots? Why not. Stripes with paisley print? Go for it. And how about leopard? Go full blast van der Woodsen style and wear leopard print with an intensely bright green dress and blue suede boots.

Another key tactic in Gossip Girl garb is to layer freely. That is, don't just wear a dress and jacket. Wear a dress, tights, a vest, a scarf, a cape and elbow length gloves. The ladies of the show are very young - both on screen and off - and it's a time when experimenting with your style is more than appropriate. So pile on the frocks and accessories, but note those: don’t go oversized! These girls wear their clothes tailored and sexy. The characters might get their gear at Bergdorf or Bloomies, but for this purpose Target will do just fine.

Finally, and in odd opposite to the previous tips, GG style is ultra preppy. It makes some sense, really, given the private school in Manhattan setting of the show. However, it's a sharp left turn from some of the exaggerated looks that incorporate bright colors and mixed patterns. School girl minis and pinstripe blazers are very much in order when getting the Blair or Serena look. Think classic flats, pearls and pea coats. But never take it all too seriously. The best part of Gossip Girl style is that it looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy!
