WILLIAM H. GRIER, M.D. William H. Grier is a psychiatrist, author, and academic who together with co-author Price Cobbs wrote "Black Rage" in 1968, one of the most important sources on life in black America according to a contemporary New York Times book review. The book was on the New York Times best seller list for months. Dr. Grier was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical School; Professor of Psychiatry at Wayne State University School of Medicine; Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco, California and held academic appointments at U.C.Berkeley and other universities. He was a Fellow of the Adlai Stevenson Institute, University of Chicago. He was a consultant to the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare; the Department of Justice; committees of the U.S. Senate; the U. S. House of Representatives, and other U.S. government agencies. He served as consultant to Canada; the Republic of Portugal; and the Republic of Guyana. He graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine and completed a residency in Psychiatry at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka Kansas. He was trained as a psychoanalyst in Detroit Michigan. He is now retired but maintained a private practice for many years and has served as consultant to major corporations, among them, General Electric, Chrysler Corp, Levi Strauss, and Aerojet General Corporation. While he is most widely known for authorship of "Black Rage", Dr. Grier also wrote "The Jesus Bag" with the same co-author and independently published research and journal articles which focussed on the psychological sequellae of racial discrimination. Dr. Grier is retired and lives in Encinitas, California.
