Simply put, it was done because we were able to do it. It started with capturing still frames, or photographs. But when the leap was made to motion pictures, it became a great way of sharing information and entertaining masses. The had all of the same benefits of a play but the actors didn't need to tour or preform over and over. It was popular, interesting, and had longevity. Plus it made money, which made it work.
