Between 1960 and 1970 about 16000 tube wells were installed each year. This large increase in the demand for tube wells led to the growth of the small scale engineering industry.

There was a big demand for tube wells after 1960 as in villages transportation of water from wells and rivers was difficult and this new way of using tubewells was easy for transportation of water to villages aswell as farm
