*WARNING SPOILERS IF YOU HAVN'T READ/SEEN V FOR VENDETTA* Valerie's letter was the catalyst that caused V to become the idea behind the mask vigilante, if you've seen the movie, when Evey sees his shrine to her, she says "This is what it's all about, you're doing all this to get back at them for what they did to her."

When V tricks Evey into believing he is being tortured and going to be executed by the government, he leaves Valerie's letter for her to find, just like he did, and she undergoes the same psychological transformation that he did.

In Valerie's letter, she says "Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all we really have. It is the very last inch of us, but within that inch we are free" What she's trying to explain is that even though anyone can threaten you, torture you, or kill you, they can't ever take away your hopes, your dreams, memories, and all those little things in life that make you, you.

Valerie's letter is also a source of hope for V and Evey because in her letter she doesn't focus on how she hates Norse fire (The tyrannical British government in the story) how she blames them, or anything like that. Instead she writes about her memories of happier days, of Ruth and her lovers, and her hope that there will be better days ahead, even if she's not alive to see them. "It seems strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years I had roses, and apologized to no one."

In a world full of fear and hatred and violence, Valerie acts as a benevolent inspiration in that her life may have been reduced to a scrap of toilet paper scribbled on, however she held onto that last inch of integrity, and her last moments were her own. No one, not the government, her captors, her impending death, could make her anything but what she wanted to be, and nothing could make her impart any other message for the world but a message of honest love and hope. "An inch-It is small and fragile, and it is the only thing in the world worth having." When she writes that "I hope you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do now know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you." She recognizes that her life is more than just fear and survival day to day, and hidden from the truth about herself. Her life is worthwhile because of her experiences with such precious things as honest love against a society that condemns it, her life can be extinguished at any time, but her impact in such a benevolent manner is all that matters. Her ability to inspire hope through her love for a complete stranger she will never have the chance to express corporeally in such dire circumstances is the mark of a truly Graceful soul. That is why Valerie is so important in V for Vendetta

I really hope that helps!
