There are several reasons....
1) It gets people's attention
2) It raises people's emotional reactions (we remember things when we feel a strong emotional response
3) It distracts us from how they are trying to trick us into buying their product using language and visuals. (Try watching commercials on mute. See what you notice that you might otherwise overlook. The music usually helps engage your mind so you overlook the other stuff.)

I Know a little about how much is in the music industry i would have a guess that they are worth around 60 million pounds so 120 million dollars but that has to be divided between them and there label... so each they will be worth ruffy 30 million dollar... but that dont plug other companies or do adverts or sell there music for adverts which makes the awsome... but they would be worth more if they did.
What I have found from searching the Internet is that it was called Bellhop and about the only theme not written by Ronnie Hazelhurst at the time. It was in fact composed by someone named John Shakespeare. Maybe he was the unknown Shakespeare of music? I also heard the song is used a lot on adverts in the states.
