Why is Otis Redding famous?

Because Otis Redding was a wonderful song writer. You may recognize some of his hits such as "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay", he originally wrote "My Girl" (though it was made famous by The Temptations), Knock on Wood,and the original beatles hit "Day Tripper"

He died in a plane crash with his back up band "The Bar-Kays". Only two Bar-Kays survived, one was not on the plane and one was ejected from it and landed in a lake.
