He is obsessed with her because of her smell. She smells like that to all vampires.

In the book its also because of the way Edward protected her. When Edward got into a defensive position to defend Bella, James made it like a game. James then tells Bella that he has her mother. Later, Bella finds out that James went through her videos and found one that convinces Bella that her mom is in there.

She attacks him in Breaking Dawn because he imprints on her baby! I hope I did not spoil any secrets for you and if I did, I am terribly sorry but I had to answer this question.By the way, imprinting is when a wherewolf finds his soulmate, in other words his life partner and will do anything to protect her. She becomes the centre of his universe. Of course it is not their choice on who to imprint on.

An antagonist is someone who opposes the protagonist and works against them. (The antagonist is the "bad guy" in the story.) So James is the antagonist because he tries to kill Bella, to protagonist.

He wants to kill her because he likes to track people and thinks of it as a game. He saw the Cullens, and especially Edward, acting protective over Bella and thought of it as a challenge.
