When Voldemort came to kill Harry (because of the prophecy "neither can live while the other survives"), Harry's mother, Lily Potter (formerly Lily Evans) refused to stand aside and gave her life to save her son. Because of her sacrifice, Voldemort's curse backfired, leaving Harry with only his famous lightning shaped scar.
