Because back in 1963 it was originally written to entice children into learning about history by making it fun and entertaining and a bit mysterious and dramatic. Then over the years it developed a life of it's own and today people are still intrigued by the fact that in the show, unlike most every other TV show out there, each week the episodes can be literally anywhere. From a bedroom to another planet. Into the past, the present, or the future. There is something that lures people in about an ancient mysterious alien who is both childish, and wise, compassionate and dangerous.

It has a bit of everything. For people who enjoy sci fi monsters and running through corridors, there is plenty of that. For those who like taking a walk through history and meeting historical figures or envisioning the future and what it might be like, there is all kinds of that too. And for those who like to watch characters develop, their troubles, their relationships and feelings and how they interact, there is also loads of that. A good bit of things that make kids hide behind the sofa, and the adults chuckle at or be drawn in by.
