Why does the doctor in Doctor Who carry a ring around in his pocket?

i think its a time ring of thfrom the time lords given to the doctor in genesis e daleks its kind of like a portable tardis but u have to watch the episode genesis of the daleks to know what it fully does and read i am a dalek a quick by gareth Roberts how got given it because the tardis wasnt on skaro and the doctor a co got transported to skaro by the time lords hope that helped

This question comes up, in a sense, in series 4 in The Doctor's Daughter and it's a very good question. The real question here is "What differentiates a Time Lord from a Gallifreyan?" The answer? Well, it's sort of a culture thing for the most part, a "shared hisory", as he says. There are probably one or two other differences too. As for the reason he is a Time Lord, the Doctor was raised to be one. He was probably, as he described in The Sound of Drums in series 3, taken from his home when he was eight years old to go to school at the academy and got a look at the untempered schism from which he ran.
