Simon's encounter with the Lord of the Flies is one of the most important events in the book. Simon's meeting with Lord of the Flies is a foreshadow into his own death, Simon looks into the vast darkness in Lord of the flies and later dies after his meeting with lord of the flies. The meeting also reveals to Simon that the fear of the lord of the flies or the "beasties" is truly within themselves.

Simon is an epileptic and during an epileptic fugue he has an internalised conversation with the evil which he knows dwells within us all. He mentally projects this inner beast onto the pig's head on a stick which Jack has left as an offering for the imagined beast.

In biblical times, climbing a mountain meant getting closer to God, like Moses onMount Sinai. Simon is a prophet figure in "Lord of the Flies", a mystic, a contemplative. (He swoons and goes into a trance.)

The dead parachutist is an ironic symbol. The only adult on the island is dead and cannot be of any help to the boys. (For that matter, when the boys are finally "rescued", it is by a destroyer -- a symbol of the war-torn world they left behind, ofadult violence and disorder.)

The parachutist may also be a symbol of Christ or God. (He hangs from the branches of a tree as Christ hung from the cross.) In other words, God is "dead" or does not care about the violence in the world.

This is in contrast to the pig's head on a stake, which stands for evil or Satan. One name for the devil is Beelzebub -- which literally means "Lord of the Flies". (The ancient Israelites considered the swine's flesh unclean.)

The 'Lord of the Flies' is simply the evil within us all, it isn't a physical being. Simon was having an epileptic fit while he was staring at the pig's head on the stick. He already suspected that the 'beast' wasn't an animal, he thought it was just 'themselves' and he had said so at a meeting. Simon was simply working things out as a conversation inside his own mind. Most of the other boys simply accepted that the beast was real and the ones who didn't, such as Ralph and Piggy, had temporarily suspended their disbelief after Samneric reported actually seeing a supposedly real beast.

When Simon holds a conversation with the Lord of the Flies he isn't talking to a pig's head on a stick or to The Devil. Simon is simply holding an internal conservation with the darkness within, with the evil which is inside everyone. Simon is essentially having a silent conversation with himself.

he has a fit and imagines the Lord of the Flies talking to him, he is chosen by the author as he is the cypher and the one that is most likely to understand the message the Lord of the Flies gives, which is that the beast is within.

Because Simon is halucinating. The Lord of the Flies speaks to Simon to tell him about how they are acting. Simon is the only sane person on the island who has not commited a violent act.
