In the early scripts for The Simpsons, "do'h" was written as "annoyed grunt". Dan Castelleneta (who plays Homer) interpreted this as d'oh - which he said derived from Jimmy Finlayson who appeared in many Laurel and Hardy film and used to say "d'oh" as a self-censoring form of "damn".
