I don't know much about guns, but it seems he switched to a revolver after the case with Tobias Hankel, who played Russian Roulette with him with a revolver. In that episode, Reid never gets shot, but at the end, he manages to get the gun away from Tobias, and having time for only one shot, and one bullet in the gun, he manages to shoot Tobias down. In that way, the "god" that Tobias/Raphael was refering to when he played russian roulette (he called the bullet "God's Will") was on Spencer's side.

It seems to me like it could be both a thematic choice by the writers and a psychological coping choice on Reid's part to use the same kind of weapon that saved him. "God", or at least "righteousness" is on his side.
