Peeta has more of an idea of where Katniss is, and the careers are thick enough to believe that he is thick enough to know that they will let him live if they find her. They have to kill Katniss because she got a 11 in training, and therefore has some secret weapon.

Becuae other people knew that he wa a winner and the reason he was put into those games because hes a tribute that has won the games before, so then want them to win again?
Well, a District 3 boy is seen guarding the camp in the scene where Katniss shoots the apples, but Peeta Mellark is the first tribute from a different district to be allowed into the Career pack. It is later revealed that Peeta never trusted or liked the Career tributes, and clearly only joined the Careers to stay alive.

Chapter eleven is where all 24 tributes are standing on the pedestals in the arena waiting for the gong to sound to begin the Hunger Games. Katniss runs into the forest, and finds herself a tree to say at for a while, and then she hears Peeta and the career tributes below her working together.
