Simply, they want to get viewers. Making something more dramatic than it is will draw in some people. It also gets people talking about it and it spreads and then people pay more attention to the story and the viewership spreads. So it is a sort of advertising and marketing ploy. If they told news stories in a very bland and uninteresting way, people will pay less attention. They need viewers though, so they have to hype it up a bit and sensationalise it.
