First of all, because God (Alllah) commanded it. this is in Judaism and Christianity, as well. At least, it was in those traditions - before people removed it. have you ever seen a painting of Mary without a cover on her head?

Secondly, it is a protection for women and a protection for society. For women because they are human beings - not sex objects. The scarf on the head (and the modest covering of her body) says: "treat me with respect". For society because all the prohibited sexual activities that take place is because men become excited when they see a woman's body.

As your hair is one of your main features it attracts mostly men to look at women... the headscarf prevents you to be attractive for the wrong people.
