The instant they took him in, Mr and Mrs Dursley swore that his magical abilities and all of the magical world would not play a part in Harry's life. The Potters were shunned by the Dursleys for the abnormality, and consequently, Harry was unaware there was anything extraordinary about him or his parents.
The sole reason Harry eventually found out was due to a half-giant and groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid, hand delivering Harry a letter accepting Harry into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizarding, then explaining his situation.
