Why didn't Kevin Arnold and Winnie cooper ended toghether?

She goes off to study in Paris for eight years. While she's gone they write to each other once a week. When she returns he is waiting for her, with his wife, and child as well. The narrator says at one point something like "Life doesn't exactly turn out as you expect it to be". So I guess they didn't get marry because sometimes things just don't pan out. I personally am really upset by the ending. They should of gotten together, that kind of love isn't easy to come by, it's once in a lifetime kind of love, if you have that you should never let it go, but regardless that's why they didn't get together.
