"It was pity that stayed Bilbo's blade." --Gandalf
"Pity stayed his hand." Gollum was so pathetic that Bilbo didn't have the heart to harm him, especially as he (Bilbo) was invisible at the time.

Bilbo never killed Gollum, he spared his life after seeing how pitiful the creature was, he knew Gollum lost the only thing he loved, and Bilbo did not feel the need to kill him for that reason.

Gandalf stated that it was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand... I guess when he saw how much pain and suffering he was enduring because of the ring, something he couldn't really control, that he felt sorry for the pitiful creature who had once been so much like himself. Whether it was the right thing to do or not, however, is up to you to decide... he did play a crutial role in the future of the ring of power, and without him, Frodo and Sam might have been lost in the wilderness until they died!

Depends. If Bilbo had willingly given up the ring, Gollum might have been to distracted with the return of "His Precious" to hurt Bilbo. If Bilbo fought for it though, Gollum would without a doubt have killed him in some gruesome manner.

Bilbo felt pity for Gollum. Which is just as well because Gollum had a part to play in the adventures of Frodo and Sam.

Gollum had just eaten. He was more curious then hungry. So he approached the strange creature to find out more about him and if he was tasty.

Bilbo was not sleeping well. He dreamed that there were cracks opening up in the cave. When he realized he was not dreaming he screamed, which gave Gandalf enough time to avoid capture.

What is Bilbo and Gollum's game?

Bilbo said, talking to himself, "what have i got in my pocket?" (it was the Ring). Gollum thought it was a riddle and Bilbo decided to make it one. he gave Gollum three chances to guess and gollum lost after four. then gollum went "to get something" (it was the ring), and Bilbo thought he was abandoned and left with the ring on. Gollum thought Bilbo knew the way out and he wanted to follow him, realizing Bilbo had the ring. Bilbo saw Gollum racing towards the gate and followed him to safety.

Why was Bilbo called ring winner?

Because Bilbo won it in his game of riddles with Gollum.

How did Bilbo escape from the cave in The Hobbit?

Bilbo escaped from the cave in The Hobbit by using his wits and the magical ring he found earlier in the story. He put on the ring, rendering himself invisible, and slipped past Gollum, the creature guarding the exit. Bilbo then followed Gollum out of the cave and made his way back to the company of dwarves.

In 'The Hobbit' how is Bilbo different from other hobbits?

Gollum was first known as smeagul but once he found the ring and killed his brother he was then known as Gollum (he got this name when the ring took controlled of him and he started making the chocking noise sounding like the word Gollum). He had the one ring for hundreds of years giving him unnatural long life. He became fixed on the ring and would kill anyone who would take it like he tried to do to Bilbo once he noticed he had lost it. Gollum would not give the ring up easily and tried to take it from Frodo in The Lord Of The Rings. Bilbo had it for much shorter time, so part of his own mind was still in control and was not as obbsessed with the ring as Gollum, and was able to find the will to give it up and pass it on to his adopted heir, Frodo Baggins.

'No great leap for a man but a leap in the dark' discuss this quotation with respect to Bilbo's decision not to kill Gollum and his new found courage?

For one thing, to my recollection, Bilbo never decidedthat he wouldn't kill Gollum. I don't think the thought barely crossed his mind. Although he did have a little bit of new found courage, which was probably the result of his discovering the magical Ring. "No great leap for a man, but a leap in the dark." It doesn't seem to have much metaphorical meaning behind it. Bilbo made an attempt to leap over Gollum, who was sitting in the middle of the path. Of coursre it was no great leap for a man -- Bilbo was no man, he was a three-foot-and-a-half-tall hobbit. And it was definitely a leap in the dark, the pitch black dark.
