It's been a while since I've seen it but I think Elias saw something he wasn't supposed o so got killed just to shut him up. I think Barnes killed another soldier or villagers.
In the bigger picture, Sgt Barnes and Sgt. Elias were polar opposites. Barnes was brutal, a killer, unforgiving. Elias was free-living, gregarious, gentle and fairminded.
