I wondered the same thing. I've since read in a couple of sources that Bond broke a hip during the filming of China Doll, with Victor Mature. The film was released in 1958. Since that coincides with the 1958 Wagon Train episodes in which Bond was on crutches, I'm guessing the hip injury was the cause. I have not, however, read a more direct explaination.
