It is somewhat hard to say. Criss himself said to the paparazzi that he was stressed and he didn't get enough tunes. On a show called, Kids are People, Too, KISS was featured on the show. Paul Stanley said that he had a new wife and kids, so he wanted to spend more time with them. Hope this helps!

Peter Criss was not kicked out of KISS, he quit for his solo tour. He felt that if he stayed with KISS that he might miss his chance for his solo tour.
Ace Frehley was a drug addict, and he left because of his problems and icy relationship with the band. Criss complained that he didn't have enough tunes.

It depends on Which time you are referring to and which band members you are referring to. The original band members were: Gene Simmons Paul Stanley Peter Criss Ace Frehley The band formed in 1973 and the original members were together until 1980. At this point Peter Criss either left the band or was fired depending on who's account you listen too. Either way his departure had a lot to do with the pit falls of success - too many drugs, long periods of time on the road, and inner turmoil. He was replaced by Eric Carr - who was with the band until his death in 1991. Eric Carr was then replaced by Eric Singer - who was witht he band until '96 (we'll get to his departure later). Ace Frehely quit the band shortly after Criss left. I believe in 1982 or 1983. He left for many of the same reasons as Criss - however I think he had a lot more say in the matter than Criss did. He was replaced by Vinnie VIncent - who wasn't with the band for long - Vicent was fired because basically he was a Jerk. He was replaced by Mark St. John - who also didn't last long and had to quit for health reasons. St. John was replaced by Bruce Kulick (in '84 I believe) and he was with the band until '96 (we'll get to his departure later as well). So during most of the 80's the band was: Gene Simmons Paul Stanley Bruce Kulick Eric Carr (who was only replaced after his death in '91) Now comes 1995/1996. Some things were happening with the band - long story short they started to rekindle their relationship with Criss and Frehley. They put the make up back on and a huge reunion tour was scheduled. This reunion tour was "supposed" to have a set time however that didn't happen. So Kulick and Singer were waiting in the wings for a temporary reunion that never ended. They either got tired of waiting or were let go - I've never heard the official story. So Kiss tours with the original members for several years. At some point some of the old stuff that originally broke them up starts to re-appear (minus the drugs though I think). Criss and Frehley are playing with their original band but at this point are more like employees of Simmons and Stanley. Criss gets "greedy" and wants more money - this disput leads to his departure for the second time. He is replaced by Singer (who now wears the original Pete makeup). Ace, as before, leaves shortly after this (he and Simmones were never real good friends) - and he is replaced by Tommy Thayer (who wears the Ace makeup and even acts the part of Ace). So in a nutshell there you have it. Kiss broke up a few times - usually over money, personalities, or drugs. Since the first break up of the original members Kiss really has been Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons - everyone else is sort of a hired gun (with the exception of Kulick and Carr who really did seem to be part of the band).
The classic 'creative differences'. The band felt Peter Gabriel's showmanship and costumes were distracting the audience from the music, while Gabriel wanted to persue different areas to the rest of the band. They toured together for another year once they agreed to part ways, and there was never any tension or resentment between them.
