They wanted new material for a new album, so they wrote more music. After that Jonny Craig wrote lyrics for the entire album. Thats why the lyrics don't have the standard "verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bride-chorus" pattern. They wrote the music just to write and the lyrics came later. Jonny always writes lyrics based out of situations in his life. In particular, "The Past Should Stay Dead" is about an experience (likely sexual) with someone that he wants to forget (pretty apparent by the title). He regrets the experience (this dirt won't come all off/it can't be pushed aside). He says their relationship was just a dream and he doesn't want to dream anymore (for once lets leave the dreaming to someone else). Next is the girl's reaction to his suggestion (All at once it leaves you breathless with next to nothing but open hands. Reach out hold on tight. I know it hurts but keep trying. And with your luck this won't be over quick. Out of the blue it strikes you. What's left to catch but the fear of letting go?). He second guesses himself (For once don't be so weak. Back up the feelings that you claim now. Fall deeper into a world That you can't explain). He gives himself a reason to sever their bond (I see a mistake and it's you/don't try another lie/I know the truth). Not certain but here it sounds like he's saying she cheated on him but its a guess and it obviously uses lyrics from the opening tying the theme together (We know who does it best, Wind is blowing through closed doors With shadows dancing in the hall. Now hit the floor, crawl to the side, We've all made better moves despite the slowing of our feet.). He knows she's mad but he's made up his mind (Let hate save you when nothing else will.
