Viewing ratings had begun to fall and the public perception of the show was beginning to become quite bad so controller of BBC One, Jonathan Powell, suspended production in 1989.
The series was not formally cancelled, but was put on hiatus due to low viewership numbers and a poor time slot. Outside of the Doctor Who TV film in 1996, it wasn't fully revived until 2005.
