It was easier for an alternative band or performer to sign with an "indie" label than one of the major labels. The independent labels were more willing to take a chance on something different or new.
Some bands used their indie success to get major labels interested (like Nirvana), while others stayed true to the small labels that supported them early on. A few performers (like Juliana Hatfield) had concurrent deals with both an indie and a major.

Many people tend to think indie rock is a style of music when in fact it just means that the band is with an independent (indie) music publisher and not with the bigger labels. Although you tend to find that indie labels will sign more bands/singers from alternative forms of music whereas bigger labels like to sign bands/singers from mainstream. Because technology is so easily accessible, it also made it easier for bands to produce music on their own instead of relying on mainstream labels - creating an increase in independent (or "indie") bands. The increase in small and indie bands has created a wider variety of subgenres underneath alternative rock and a multitude of different sounds and styles. Logically, technology has increased the specific sounds and effects present in songs. Mixing different songs, overlapping recordings, and other general actions involved in the music-making process are easier to access for artists and studios. Thanks to technology, a lot of songs that would be considered old, such as the Pixies, have been remastered and the sound quality increased.
