It was easier for an alternative band or performer to sign with an "indie" label than one of the major labels. The independent labels were more willing to take a chance on something different or new.
Some bands used their indie success to get major labels interested (like Nirvana), while others stayed true to the small labels that supported them early on. A few performers (like Juliana Hatfield) had concurrent deals with both an indie and a major.

Yes
Record companies prefer anybody or bodies that's gonna make them a lot of money doesn't matter if it's a solo artist or a group of artists
Foster the Peoples musical styles include alternative and indie pop.
Yes. There are bands that record with tape because that's all they have access to. Also, there are plenty of people in the music industry that still prefer the sound of analog tape. Especially when it comes to metal music. The low end is a lot richer on analog tape. With metal records this makes the kick boom, and many bands prefer it. Most people are recording digitally, but there are still a few that use tape.
Many people tend to think indie rock is a style of music when in fact it just means that the band is with an independent (indie) music publisher and not with the bigger labels. Although you tend to find that indie labels will sign more bands/singers from alternative forms of music whereas bigger labels like to sign bands/singers from mainstream. Of course nowadays indie is mainstream. Go figure! Bands like Blur and Oasis have this style of music !!!!

they are alternative rock bands
There are very many bands that perform alternative rock songs. Some well known bands are Reliant K, Box Car Racer, Paramore, Flyleaf, Taking Back Sunday and Nirvana.
Technology has affected alternative rock music like it has any other genre: it allows artists to create, edit and produce music from their own computer. Because technology is so easily accessible, it also made it easier for bands to produce music on their own instead of relying on mainstream labels - creating an increase in independent (or "indie") bands. The increase in small and indie bands has created a wider variety of subgenres underneath alternative rock and a multitude of different sounds and styles. Logically, technology has increased the specific sounds and effects present in songs. Mixing different songs, overlapping recordings, and other general actions involved in the music-making process are easier to access for artists and studios. Thanks to technology, a lot of songs that would be considered old, such as the Pixies, have been remastered and the sound quality increased.
Yes
With the expansion of musical "freedom", what with independent labels and the existence of more record labels, metal has grown into something diverse within itself. Bands like Fear Factory and Metallica can both be considered metal, even though they are worlds apart. Basically, it has diversified and become a lot heavier in general.
